FIFA called on the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) to suspend its electoral campaign after the rejection of Didier Drogba’s candidacy, according to a letter consulted by AFP on Friday.

The FIF election turned into a soap opera marred by relentless infighting and on Thursday the former Chelsea striker’s candidacy was rejected because he had only received official support from two of the four Ivorian clubs required.

“We call for the suspension of all action related to the electoral process until further notice,” said the document dated August 27 and sent to the FIF.

Drogba’s election team said on Thursday they expected the FIF ruling that he was not eligible for the post.

“The staff of Drogba is not surprised by this decision to reject the candidacy. But we remain unperturbed. We will react to comply with the texts surrounding this election,” Mahamadou Sangare, member of the team, told AFP. by Drogba.

Drogba also has association support for the former and his current equivalent players and has five days to appeal the FIF decision.

The former captain of the Elephants stands in front of the former third vice-president of the FIF Idriss Diallo, as well as the current vice-president of the national body and president of the League Sory Diabaté.

Earlier in August, world football’s governing body called on the FIF to quash its election due to the situation.
