The election of the board members of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) will take place in Chennai on August 7.
FIDE has already chosen Chennai as the venue for the 44th Chess Olympiad, which will be held from July 28 to August 9. According to FIDE, the Indian Chess Federation (AICF) will organize the 94th FIDE Congress in Chennai during the July period. from August 31 to 7 and the election of officers will take place on August 7.
FIDE is currently headed by former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.
“Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dvorkovich was in a comfortable position and was expected to get a second term without any opposition in sight,” a grandmaster told IANS on condition of anonymity. internationally renowned senior chess player.
In 2018, Dvorkovich had to fight FIDE Vice President Georgios Makropoulos.
Given the geopolitical situation, Dvorkovich’s nationality and his past position in the Russian government, he and his team would prefer a neutral venue for the FIDE Congress.
At its meeting held on February 27, the FIDE Council had decided: “Regardless of the organization of the Chess Olympiad 2022, FIDE is organizing the FIDE Annual Congress on the dates previously scheduled – from July 27 to August 2 with the election date on August 1. The preference is to combine the FIDE Congress with the Chess Olympiad 2022.”
The FIDE Council has also suggested consultations with the potential organizers of the Chess Olympiad 2022 and authorizes an adjustment of the dates of the FIDE Congress if this does not involve a noticeable delay in the elections. The FIDE Council has confirmed that the continental elections will be held within their constitutional provisions.
